Frederick Worthington

While his employer was out having lunch with Ember Slight, the tenor's fiancée and the Paris Opera House's new leading lady, Charles was about his duties in the apartment. He was carefully dusting the furniture and any sort of décor placed on their flat surfaces, and after finishing that he would set about polishing the wood floors; all was quiet in the apartment, except for the occasional footsteps of the maid as she carried clothes and linens either to her room for folding (if they were clean) or else down to the laundry on the basement level of the building should they need to be cleaned. Antoine, the French chauffeur in the male opera star's employ, was taking his lunch break, having driven the couple to a bistro downtown in Frederick's gleaming black limousine before stopping off at his favorite café. The two singers were not due back for at least a little while longer, so it was a surprise to the English butler when he heard the main door of the apartment open, followed by the sound of two voices, one male and the other female.

"You have to come and see some of this stuff! I swear, most of it is from a yard sale!" The female voice had a British accent, upper-class in quality, yet it was unrecognizable to Charles' ears; he knew the sound of Ember's voice and easily deduced it was not her, but he wondered who this stranger was that she was in his employer's apartment. How she knew where the spare key was kept was an even better question, but for the moment he remained where he was, listening and not yet making his presence known. "I mean, come on. If this was my house, I'd shoot myself!" These words made the butler indignant, yet not overly angry. I say, what does this young lady take Master Worthington for? I respect that he wields authority over me, because I am in his employ and I earn my living by serving him. It is only fair to acknowledge that he may do what he chooses with his money; it is one thing to be critical of how a certain decoration or piece of furniture may complement the apartment, but it is a far different thing to criticize how he spends his wealth!

"I would expect to see a large self-portrait of himself right here." This time, the male voice was heard coming from the sitting room. The man was obviously an American, and just as obviously going along with the English female as he continued, saying, "Thank God someone stopped him, unless...it's probably in his bedroom." Charles was beginning to become very suspicious about the motives of the pair of strangers who had broken in and entered the apartment, but thought it wise that he remain out of sight unless something major occurred. Then he knew he would have to step in so that he might prevent any property from being damaged or stolen, especially if the man and woman turned out to be thieves.

"Looks like nobody's home..." The female voice spoke again, and the butler knew she would be dead wrong if she planned to do anything that would result in loss of valuables for which his employer had paid enormous amounts of money. Some of the decorations in the apartment were purchased by Frederick, while others were family pieces, heirlooms that had been passed down from previous generations. What came next from the English woman surprised Charles. "I do believe, Mr. Aranville, you need to make it up to me for being too busy on Valentine's Day. Starting...right now." The manservant almost gasped audibly enough that the strangers might hear him, but fought back the urge. Dear me, is she insinuating that they engage in romantic pursuits with each other? Certainly not in Master Worthington's apartment, if I have anything to say about it! The thought had just crossed the butler's mind when there came footsteps stumbling around, heavy breathing and moaning, lips meeting in passionate kisses, and then...the sound of something breaking. That was just too much for Charles, so he immediately left his duties and strode towards the source of the movements; there in the hallway were a dark-haired man and a young lady, both in the heat of passion as they stumbled about. At one point, the man broke a kiss and yelled loudly, "Where's the bedroom?"

"I think it highly inappropriate you are asking where to find a bedroom, sir, when you do not belong in this apartment," replied Charles. His voice was icy, unlike its usual serene (though serious) quality, as he added, "I know neither you nor the young lady you are embracing, and it is part of my duty as a butler to keep out unwanted guests. I shall escort you to the door and see that you do not return!" With that, the butler reached out to take the intruders by the ear, one in each hand, then led them back to the main door of the apartment.

----------------------------------

Meanwhile, Frederick had been out in the early afternoon chatting with Ember over lunch at a charming little bistro he had discovered in his travels. Instead of wearing one of his period suits, he decided to dress a bit more sharply with a black designer suit by the Versace label, adding polished dress shoes, a charcoal-gray silk vest, and a black silk tie to the ensemble. To finish it off, he also wore black gloves, a gray fedora with black hatband, and a matching Inverness cape; though some passers-by had murmured he might be a hitman working for the Mafia (or even a Mafia boss), the tenor had never known of a gun-toting 1920s gangster who wore an overcoat like his. Yet, he and Ember were quite the romantic couple, not only sharing conversation with each other but also the occasional smile, a loving glance, or a sweet kiss. When their meal was finished, the couple agreed to continue their time together at Frederick's spacious--and expensive--apartment, later having dinner there before Ember was brought back to her apartment.

Today has been perfect so far. I do not think anything could bring me down from the heights at which I find myself right now; I am just about literally on Cloud 9! When he rang Antoine and the chauffeur arrived a short time later with the limousine, the two singers were helped into the vehicle and soon they smoothly pulled away from the curb, heading back to the English gentleman's apartment. Once they arrived, they were let out of the limousine and together approached the doors, where a doorman stepped aside as he held the door open and greeted the couple. Frederick led Ember throught the lobby to a fancy, old-fashioned looking lift, which both entered and took up to the fourth floor after the gate across the open entry was pulled across. The tall, handsome opera tenor stood with his fiancée in the lift, one hand holding the tip of his silver-handled walking stick on the square-shaped floor, while his other arm had Ember's hand wrapped around the large biceps muscle; when they reached the fourth floor, he stepped out first before helping her onto the stairs, which was only a short trip up a bit further to the apartment door. As if on cue, when Frederick took out his key to unlock the door, it swung open from the inside. "Charles, what on earth...?" Standing there was the butler between two apparently uninvited houseguests.

"My apologies, sir, but I found these two after they had intruded and commenced putting the apartment in disarray. I suspect you will want to press charges for breaking and entering, as well as destruction of private property?" The wealthy young Englishman's grey eyes narrowed. "I should think so, Charles. I do not tolerate strangers entering my home and proceeding to make it a shambles...Lily?!" His eyes went wider upon recognizing his sister, although her appearance was somewhat disheveled following her passionate encounter with the fellow standing beside her. "Lily Grace, how did you find a way to enter the apartment if Charles did not let you in? And who...no!" His voice dropped to a hoarse whisper as his gaze fell upon a vaguely familiar man, an American whom Lily fancied, if he remembered correctly.

"You know the young lady, sir?" Frederick did not answer, for his blood pressure instantly spiked as he now recalled his sister's squeeze. "YOU! Out of my home!" His one arm, which Ember's hand had been on, now fell away from her hold as he reached out to take Jaxyn--that was the scum-sucking *******'s name--by the front of his shirt and, with a quick turn, throw him out of the apartment.

Ember Slight

After an afternoon spent at a quiet bistro with Frederick (who was dressed a little differently that day, to Ember's surprise), the two were to return to Frederick's apartment and spend more time together in the privacy of his home. With the soprano's afternoon off, it had been quiet and enjoyable, and now with time to occupy herself with Frederick (and the possible suggestion of a movie) the two reached the door to the apartment which had been opened from the inside. "Charles, what on earth...?" the tenor began to ask as Ember spotted two other people with the butler, the latter with an expression clear as day that read they were uninvited. The brunette could also spot what had once been a mess--and was now being cleaned by those who kept the house in it's usually pristine state.

Frederick's expression however, said the most. Wide eyes were set as Charles said, "My apologies, sir, but I found these two after they had intruded and commenced putting the apartment in disarray. I suspect you will want to press charges for breaking and entering, as well as destruction of private property?" Ember could only watch as Frederick's eyes steadily narrowed. "I should think so, Charles. I do not tolerate strangers entering my home and proceeding to make it a shambles...Lily?!" There was a sudden shift in the air as the Canadian looked to the other woman standing with disheveled clothes and mused hair, and Frederick's voice took an authoritative tone of scolding mixed with anger. "Lily Grace, how did you find a way to enter the apartment if Charles did not let you in? And who...no!" A beat. Ember looked to the man that accompanied Lily. She didn't recognize him. "You know the young lady, sir?" Charles asked, but went unanswered as Frederick's arm dropped from Ember's and reached out towards the uninvited male. "YOU! Out of my home!"

Ember's eyes widened in shock as she stepped back to avoid getting mixed up in the kerfuffle as Frederick turned to throw the man out of the home. The brunette looked from the tenor, to Lily (who, Ember recalled, was Frederick's sister) and then to Charles before her gaze returned back to Frederick, staying silent, though her expression all the more shocked than any words could really express.

Frederick Worthington

Home at last with my beautiful wife! Ah, to finally share this lovely apartment with her has been a dream of mine! It was wonderful to be home with Mother and Father, to marry on English soil before jetting off to the French Riviera for a honeymoon at our new villa, but tomorrow we are to be at the opera house for another day of work. Even great opera singers must keep at their craft! These thoughts were running through the mind of Frederick Worthington as he and Ember entered the building that housed his gorgeous, luxurious apartment where he had been staying since moving to France. The handsome star tenor--known for his heroic good looks, stunning grey eyes, impeccable grooming (particularly his midnight-black hair and the long sideburns he sported along his high, chiseled cheekbones), and unique taste in apparel--was bringing the Canadian soprano whom he had married only two weeks before to her new home in Paris. Always a gentleman, he allowed Ember to step into the lift first after she was officially registered as a resident at the concierge desk in the lobby; although he had married under his given name, Lord Chesterton Ashleigh, he remained registered for the apartment with his stage name, so she had used her maiden name to avoid confusion. The English sensation was smartly dressed in a deep-blue Victorian number, complemented by a fine black silk waistcoat and a light-gold ascot tacked at his throat, and accented with black kid gloves. His new military-style cape, with a double chain clasped between two burnished gold eagle seals, was draped around his broad shoulders (a gift to the groom on his wedding day from his father). It seemed to take forever for the antique-style lift to reach the fourth floor, but at last the happy couple stepped out onto the landing and walked up the few stairs to the apartment door. Frederick reached into his jacket's liner pocket behind his cape, removed the key, and opened the lock before replacing the key. "Welcome, my love, to your new home." A wide smile split the English opera superstar's handsome face as he braced his new wife with one arm (the hand holding tight to the brim of his top hat) and swept the other beneath her knees to lift her off the floor into his strong embrace. Then, in traditional fashion, the newlyweds entered the apartment with the heroic groom carrying his bride over the threshold, setting her feet onto the carpet runner covering the middle part of the hardwood floor just past the entry foyer. Charles, Frederick's personal manservant at his Paris residence, entered the hall area.

"Welcome home, sir, madam! Jolly good to hear of your return, Master Worthington, and with your new wife! Ms. Slight, it is a pleasure to have you as a member of the family at last," said the older Englishman as he bowed graciously to the married couple. "Ms. Slight, you may remember I am Charles, the butler in charge of maintaining this household. Should you require anything, know that I am always at your service, as I have been for Master Worthington. Our other staff are a maid, Julietta; Antoine, whom my employer will tell you is, by far, the best chauffeur in Paris..." Here the tall, muscular opera tenor nodded and smiled at Ember to confirm the butler's words, "...and Nelson, a chef who will make a masterpiece of every meal." "Yes, I shall have to introduce Ember to the other house staff. It is indeed good to be home, old chap. I trust all has been kept in order while I was away?"

"Quite so, sir. I do hope you have found a replacement for that vase which was broken some months ago; it was quite lovely." "Yes, and quite expensive. Luckily, however, a replacement was found while we were doing some shopping on the French Riviera during our honeymoon. It is being shipped to Paris and should arrive within the next few days." Both men could still remember how Frederick's sister, Lily, and her boy toy broke into the apartment and, in the heat of their passion, stumbled into an end table, causing the vase to fall to the floor and break into pieces. The tenor, in a fit of anger, banished Jaxyn from the premises and Lily, not wanting to be separated from the American, left in a huff, effectively spoiling the end of an otherwise enjoyable day spent in Ember's company. "Good show! I am sure it will add to the elegance of this apartment as the original had done before its untimely end. Ah! I am forgetting, may I take your things?" The wealthy young singer nodded, then his manservant stepped behind Ember to take her outerwear before Frederick undid the chain clasp at his throat so that Charles could remove his cape. After the cape was taken, he handed over his gloves and top hat to be put away in the front cloakroom, and while this was being done the handsome gentleman bent his arm, the other hand gently placing his wife's hand in the crook of his elbow. Her new diamonds sparkled under the light radiating from a beautiful crystal chandelier, catching the tenor's grey irises before they moved up to her face, which was just as lovely. "Would you like to take a tour of the apartment, dearest? Or do you prefer we..." He dropped his voice to a low, sensual purr, his voice taking on a very rich, almost baritonal quality as he finished the sentence, "...save it for a little later?" Frederick leaned in a bit further as his lips met Ember's, the two sharing a few tender kisses before a deep, throaty chuckle escaped from his mouth.

Ember Slight

Shortly after the Christmas celebrations and after the new year had begun, Ember soon found herself taking inventory of what of her things would be moved into Frederick's home and if anything would stay behind in her own apartment to start renting out the small home. The emotions that kept Ember going were a small sense of giddiness and focus, both tied together by a strong undercurrent of excitement--She would finally be living with Frederick in his beautiful home where they could start their lives together as husband and wife, along with their expanding careers.

For the past few days while packing her things, the brunette and her husband had been carefully filling out the registration papers for her to become a permanent resident of the apartment complex Frederick lived in and today, after signing the last of the papers, Ember was now officially living with him! The two stepped into the lift together, Ember invited to enter first, followed by the navy suit-clad gentleman before they were taken to the fourth floor, and Ember allowed Frederick to lead the way with a gentle smile.

Ember's outfit that day took some reflection from Frederick's crisp suit with a charcoal grey skirt-suit combination. With a tailored blazer paired with a free-flowing knee-length skirt, a white blouse and some of her favorite shoes, Ember was happy to keep her outfits simple since she had started her relationship with Frederick.

When the two were presented with the Brit's apartment, Frederick unlocked and opened the door, a handsome smile released itself onto his lips as he said, "Welcome, my love, to your new home." With the feeling of two smooth movements behind her, Frederick's one arm braced her shoulders as the other swept her from her feet and Ember let out a merry ring of laughter in reply as her own arms cast themselves around his neck until they had crossed over the threshold of the home and Ember felt her feet plant themselves carefully back onto the floor.

A smile remained painted on her face when Frederick released his arms from around her, and she too, did the same taking his hand instead. The sound of solid footsteps were heard rounding the corner just moments after the two had arrived and Charles, the man who ran Frederick's home in working and habitable order, appeared.

"Welcome home, sir, madam! Jolly good to hear of your return, Master Worthington, and with your new wife! Ms. Slight, it is a pleasure to have you as a member of the family at last," He began with a cheerful disposition as he bowed graciously to the two Opera performers. "Ms. Slight, you may remember I am Charles, the butler in charge of maintaining this household. Should you require anything, know that I am always at your service, as I have been for Master Worthington. Our other staff are a maid, Julietta; Antoine, whom my employer will tell you is, by far, the best chauffeur in Paris..." Ember glanced to Frederick as he nodded, "...and Nelson, a chef who will make a masterpiece of every meal."

"Yes, I shall have to introduce Ember to the other house staff.

It is being shipped to Paris and should arrive within the next few days."

Ember recalled when herself and Frederick had returned from an afternoon together, to find that Charles had discovered Frederick's younger sister and her boyfriend had taken to making themselves at home--which included removing many of Frederick's own home design choices. She then recalled during the honeymoon when as husband and wife, took to the beautiful boutiques and found a rather pretty replacement vase for the one that the Englishman and Charles spoke of.

"Good show! I am sure it will add to the elegance of this apartment as the original had done before its untimely end. Ah! I am forgetting, may I take your things?" Charles offered once the matter of interior design had met it's end during the conversation. Ember nodded along with Frederick, and the two shed their outerwear before her hand was placed in the crook of her husband's arm. Watching as grey irises moved from the hand held in his up to her face, Ember smiled when her own hazel ones met Frederick's.

"Would you like to take a tour of the apartment, dearest? Or do you prefer we..." the Tenor spoke while leaning in, Ember's eyes gazing up to his still before his voice dropped and his words finished with a purr, "...save it for a little later?" Ember giggled again as Frederick pressed his lips to hers and the two exchanged a few gentle kisses that the brunette couldn't help but feel the smallest spark light when their lips touched before Frederick gave a low chuckle of his own.

"That depends," Ember said with a bit of a cheeky smile, her face still hovering close to his. "But as long as I get you to myself, I have little objection to what we do." Her smile eventually softened as she kissed Frederick again. "I think a tour is called for--just so I don't get lost for now," she teased.

Frederick Worthington

Charles busied himself with putting away those belongings Frederick and Ember had given to him in the front cloakroom as the Englishman who owned the apartment asked his wife if she would like to take a tour of her new home, or if she would like to do so at a later time. The couple, still so happy after two weeks following their wedding and a relaxing honeymoon at their new villa on the French Riviera, exchanged a few kisses before the Canadian-born soprano spoke up.

"That depends." The young woman's face remained in close proximity to that of her handsome husband, a cheeky smile spreading her soft lips as each focused their gaze on the other. In his downward peripheral vision he could just make out the simple, yet fashionable skirt-suit she wore with a pair of Chanel heels; by now, she had the ability to fully look the part of a wealthy, high-class lady, as was to be expected between having a new, higher-paying job title and being married to an English lord. "But as long as I get you to myself, I have little objection to what we do." Ember's smile softened, as did that of her beloved tenor, before their lips melted together once more in a romantic kiss. "I think a tour is called for--just so I don't get lost for now," she finally said, prompting Frederick to smile as they pulled out of the kiss.

"Capital, my dear! There is so much I have to show you," he replied, beginning to lead her just a short distance to the left; the butler approached at that moment, having finished putting away the couple's outer clothing, and stood with his hands clasped at the small of his back. "Your things have been put away, sir, madam. I shall be about my regular duties. If you need anything at all, do not hesitate to call upon me." Charles gave another dignified bow, which his employer returned with a nod of his head, before striding past the two singers to return to his work. Frederick then led Ember to a beautiful wood door--stained to a rich, dark finish--and paused before speaking again. "Our first stop on this tour is...your new office." He turned the heavy, gleaming brass doorknob and opened the door, revealing a comfortable, bright, and elegantly-furnished office space. Frederick held his breath, waiting for his wife's reaction; he had imported the finest wood furniture and decorated with the help of a renowned interior designer, then purchased everything that would be needed for the office to be effectively used, yet before he was married the room had never been occupied since he would typically work in the small office-library off of the sitting room. "What do you think, my love? Is it to your satisfaction?"

Ember Slight

Frederick smiled in return to Ember's and he replied, "Capital, my dear! There is so much I have to show you."

Ember had been in Frederick's home before and had spent time there--but never had she been invited to see the more intimate rooms of the house besides the living room, kitchen, dining areas and Frederick's own small library-study room. Now, she lived there and suddenly the apartment increased in size by ten-fold and she couldn't help but find delight mixed with awe that it was where she lived as well.

Charles politely said following putting away Frederick's and Ember's outerwear, "Your things have been put away, sir, madam. I shall be about my regular duties. If you need anything at all, do not hesitate to call upon me." And Frederick nodded as his manservant gave a stately bow and left the two to themselves and Frederick began to lead Ember down to one of the first rooms, which was just off to the left.

Pausing in front of a handsomely stained door Frederick spoke up again, "Our first stop on this tour is...your new office." The announcement was unexpected--Ember hadn't been aware she would receive a room for her own business! When her husband turned the brass doorknob and opened the door, he revealed a beautiful nook for her to occupy when she needed a space to go through her contracts, librettos and scores. Ember took a step into the room with rich rosewood floors and a beautiful carpet nestled under her new desk, chair and several bookshelves with a hand placed to the center of her chest. "What do you think, my love? Is it to your satisfaction?" Frederick asked as he waited to hear her opinion.

"Frederick, it's wonderful!" the Canadian said as she crossed to what was now her desk, and sat into the comfortable, high backed chair behind it with a smile on her face. The face of the desk was rather bare save for a delicate lamp and an intricate stationary holder, but she would change that with a few picture frames filled with pictures of herself and Frederick either during their wedding or honeymoon. The thought of pictures of the two of them made her smile more as her hands ran over the face of the desk. Pictures meant memories--and the moment she and Frederick could make more memories for themselves would mean everything to her.

Looking back to Frederick she kept her smile on her face. "Thank you," she said, "This is a beautiful room." And she stood and returned to where Frederick stood, taking his hand in hers.

Frederick Worthington

Frederick was positively glowing with happiness as he watched Ember step into the room and admire her new office. When asked if it was to her liking, her answer was a resounding, "Frederick, it's wonderful!" At this, he responded with a graceful bow, punctuated by a sweep of one strong arm, before he straightened up and brought both to the small of his back. His grey eyes took in how she ran her hands over the smooth, polished surface of the wooden desk at which she sat in a comfortable, high-backed leather chair; the Englishman felt his broad shoulders push back just a bit further and his muscular chest thrust forward just a little more as pride swelled within him.

She looks so pleased with her new office. I always wanted to have it occupied by someone else, but before now I did not have that opportunity, the gentleman thought to himself as the smile on Ember's face widened. She was obviously thinking of something herself, possibly of how she could enhance the room to make it more special, put her own personal touch on it. Oh, love, your happiness only makes my joy increase! After a few moments of taking it all in, the brunette said, "Thank you. This is a beautiful room." She stood and returned to her husband, her hand taking his into its grasp.

"You are most welcome, darling. Only the finest in furniture and décor would do for this grand abode which I have called home since coming to Paris some years ago," he declared, indicating the office and the corridor running down the length of the apartment. "And it gives me great pleasure to finally share it all with you." Both of Frederick's hands lifted Ember's upwards while he inclined his head a bit, his thin yet soft lips placing a gentle kiss just above her knuckles, ever a proper gentleman. He and his beloved stepped back out into the corridor just before he reached back and carefully, quietly closed the office door behind them. "What would you like to see next, milady Ember?" the English opera star asked as he gently placed his wife's hand at the bend of his elbow again before they would continue the tour.

Ember Slight

In reply to Ember's thanks Frederick replied, "You are most welcome, darling. Only the finest in furniture and décor would do for this grand abode which I have called home since coming to Paris some years ago." He gestured to her new office and down the hall respectively as he spoke, continuing, "And it gives me great pleasure to finally share it all with you." He then captured both her hands in his and brought them to his lips in a soft kiss across the face of her knuckles.

The two then stepped apart and Frederick allowed Ember to step from the room before reaching back and gently closing the door behind him as he asked, "What would you like to see next, milady Ember?" The brunette paused to think for a short moment. It was not as though she had never been to his home--it was rather she had never seen the more intimate parts of his palace of an apartment. She had seen his expansive dining room; his sitting room, as that is where the two had spent their time talking or enjoying one-another's company; and his handsome media room, where the rest of their time was spent if they were not out or found themselves needing entertainment.

Her stomach gave a small turn of hunger and she couldn't help but find herself smiling at the inspiration. "The kitchen perhaps?" The stop offered the opportunity to stop for a small snack as well as more of the tour of Frederick's--no, their home.

Frederick Worthington

After the question of the next stop on the apartment tour was posed, Ember paused to think for a moment. She had already seen general areas of the large living space: the dining room, sitting room, and media center were all familiar to her by now since she had made several visits to the apartment even before she and Frederick were married. The handsome young Englishman waited patiently before the brunette finally said in reply, "The kitchen, perhaps?" In response to the soprano's smile, her tall, fit husband gave a hearty laugh. "Very well, my dear. To the kitchen!" he said, posing dramatically as he pointed down the hall in the direction of their next destination. The pair then made their way to the kitchen door, which the tenor opened before allowing his lovely wife to step inside.

"Here is what Nelson has termed his 'sanctuary'. He is a master of his craft, as he will tell you; he is able, however, to back his words with the sorts of dishes he creates," Frederick proudly explained as he stood beside Ember. The kitchen was fully equipped and modernly appointed, a place where a master chef could easily work. "The kitchen is where my chef feels most at home, since it has everything he needs to create great culinary delights." It was then that the chef in question emerged from the hallway, having gone to the lavatory that was shared by the house staff. "Good evening, sir! Welcome home! You enjoyed your honeymoon, I trust?" The man, a sandy blond who was in his mid-thirties and spoke with a Liverpudlian accent, slipped through the doorway once Frederick stood aside.

"Indeed we did, Nelson. You remember Miss Slight, do you not?" The chef blushed a bit, as his employer indicated his lovely wife with a graceful gesture, then put out his hand with a smile. "No, sir, I'm afraid we've not been introduced properly. Nelson Middlebury, mum. It's a pleasure to have you in the household; Master Worthington's probably told you already that I take great pride in my work, which is true. I hope that the food I prepare for you will live up to the standards expected of a master culinary chef like myself." The man from Liverpool grasped Ember's hand, shook it (but not too firmly), and bent forward from the waist in a short bow. "Sir, mum, I'll prepare something for you if you would like." The wealthy owner of the apartment looked to his wife.

"I may have a small something, Nelson. What about you, darling?"
