It was wonderful! I think the best version is this book.
you see, he is not beautiful at all and much uglier than other versions, but its the best and i am really sorry that the original version is abandoned like this.
comparing other versions, Lerouxs phantom was gentler, kinder and of course less aggressive, of course

seal my fate tonight
I hate to have to cut the fun short
but the jokes wearing thin
let the audience in
let my opera begin

I love Leroux's book more than the musical! I prefer the book version of Christine, and generally all the characters. I feel they all have more depth.

I agree! Okay, actually they share my first place, but the characters definitely had more depth in the book, especially Christine. Also, I love the analogous actions of Erik and Raoul in the book, which is not portrayed like that in the musical. It adds a lot to it, once one discovered it.

I've read it three times and I always enjoy it quite alot.
Aah Gaston Leroux's Phantom Of the Opera!!! I first read the book about when I was 18 or so.
I've read it many times since then and I'm going to read it again sence I have it as an audiobook!!
The only things I wish Leroux talked about more were Christine's singing lessons with Erik and her early days she spent in the corps de ballay

Beneath the opera house, I know he's there.
He's with me on the stage, he's everywhere.
And when my song begins, I always find, the phantom of the opera is there, inside my mind.
"Christine Daaé! Where is your red scarf?"
You couldn't have lost it. After all the trouble I caused! I was just 14 and soked to the skin!"
"Because you had run into the sea to fech my scarf! Oh Raoul, so it is you!"
Roses, the color of blood filled her lap. In her hands she held a mask. She knew that her home was the house on the lake. Her angel of music would always be there singing songs in her head.
Are you so sure that a small jar would contain me, madame?
Three long years I've nelt in silence
Held your memory near me.
Three long years of murmured sorrow
Willing you to hear me...
“Passing bells and sculpted angels, cold and monumental...”

Personally, I pity him the most in the book. More than in the musical, a thousand times more than in the movie.

In the book, he had such an irrational, childish behaviour. He seemed so weak.

I don't recall that Christine was ever a ballerina in Leroux's book. I'm pretty certain that was ALW's doing.

Very true; she was only in the Corps de Ballet in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. And she only lived in the opera house dormitories in the 2004 movie version. In Leroux's novel, she lived with Madame Valerius after her father's death, and had been a chorus girl until her debut in "Faust."

Exactly. Christine has always been a singer, never a dancer. It was Erik who helped her to become the great and beloved talent that she was, but she was nontheless a singer to begin with.

Didn't her father die like when she was about six, and then she went to live with those people?
I do believe she still lived with the same people even after she was at the opera house, right? And how did her father die?
